What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy, or Physical Therapy, is a profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the body to restore physical function and performance.

How can Physiotherapy help me?
Physiotherapy aims to identify the root cause of your symptoms. The area that is responsible for causing the pain or dysfunction.
Treatment directed at correcting this problem is the first step on your road to regaining optimal physical function and relieving your pain. Often further work to address postural or movement imbalances will enhance this process and help prevent further problems.

What can I expect in a Physiotherapy appointment?
Firstly, you will sit down with your physio and explain the reason for your visit. Some questions to help zero in on the problem, and a physical examination to assess the injury are used to map out a treatment program. This is then discussed with you before treatment begins.

What will the Physiotherapy involve?
As the name suggests physiotherapy is the application of physical therapies. This means that most of what is done involves use of the physio’s hands – mobilisation, massage, stretching, taping and manipulation – in conjunction with exercises, electrotherapy, heat/cold, posture re-education and movement retraining.

Will I need to see anyone else?
At times your physio may suggest referral to a doctor, massage therapist, podiatrist or acupuncturist etc if it is likely to help. This can be done either within the clinic or with a professional of your choice. Several people working together towards a common goal can often improve your result.

Do I need a referral from my GP?
A GP referral is not required for consultation with a physiotherapist, however many people are however referred by a doctor before their first visit.

Who will be providing the Physiotherapy service?
Our aim at Queensland Sports Medicine Centre is to provide you with an excellent rehabilitation service. A team of physio’s that has provided service for athletes at the highest levels of sport for many years provides this.
