What is Myofascial Therapy?
Myofascial Therapy involves using a series of injections into specific trigger points within muscle and fascia (fibrous sheets that surround muscle and hold muscles together) in such a manner that it helps release tightness within the muscle and fascia.

How does Myofascial Therapy work?
When a muscle is injured, or is chronically tight, it develops ‘trigger points’. A trigger point is an area of tightness, often deep within the muscle, that keeps sending messages back to your spinal cord and brain, telling them there is a problem in the area. The spinal cord and brain then send a message back to the muscle causing it to tighten.

Injections of local anaesthetic into these deep trigger points and tight bands helps break this cycle and let the muscle and fascia release. The injection stops the trigger point sending the messages that start the cycle.

Why do these ‘trigger points’ and tight bands start?
There are many reasons. They may start due to an injury, poor biomechanics (body movement patterns) during sport, poor posture, poor training habits, or poor nutritional habits among other causes. Some of these areas may need to be addressed in conjunction with your myofascial therapy for best results.

Dr Ken Johnston who practices the myofascial therapy is also an expert in nutritional medicine and provides advice in this area.

Does Myofascial Therapy hurt?
Yes, at times this can be painful. However Dr Johnston will make available a light sedation for any treatments that may be painful.
